John Carlos, the former track and field athlete who famously raised his fist on the podium at the 1968 Summer Olympics after winning bronze in the 200 metres, has today spoken out in support of the Arctic 30 - the 28 Greenpeace activists and two independent journalists who're currently imprisoned in Russia.

Today marks the 45th anniversary of that iconic Olympics moment, and is one day out from the 30th day in which the 30 have been behind bars.

John Carlos said:

"45 years ago today I made a public statement demanding social justice. That protest was in the long tradition of civil disobedience from Gandhi to Rosa Parks. Todaym 45 years on, 30 peaceful protesters languish in a Russian jail for taking non-violent direct action to protect the Arctic from the environmental dangers of drilling for oil. Please join me in making a stand against what is wrong and join the millions around the world who are demanding their immediate release."
