Summary
The USA is currently complaining to the World Trade Organisation over the way the European Union regulates GM food. EU Directive 2001/18 and the labelling and traceability proposal COM (2001) 425 would give the public the right to know if their food contains GM material or derivatives but this approach has provoked anger in the US Government. Both EU and US consumers are in favour of labelling GM foods (by huge majorities) but the UK Government might give way to American pressure. Will Blair stand up to Bush on a fundamental issue of consumer choice?
