Volunteers head towards Menwith Hill spy base

Some 35 Greenpeace volunteers are remained within the base at Menwith Hill for several hours. Many managed to climb a water tower in the facility and were safely on top of it waving flags.

There was also a further group of volunteers that were on top of the building next to the Star Wars 'golf balls' or radomes. The remaining volunteers were simply hidden around the site itself.

The Ministry of Defence police said that they would not now attempt to remove the volunteers by force, but there were two arrests, and some volunteers were removed from the base and continues to demonstrate outside of the main gates as workers arrived at the early warning base.

Greenpeace Executive Director Stephen Tindale was at the base and urged Prime Minister Tony Blair to turn down American requests to use UK-based sites at Menwith Hill and Fylingdales, North Yorkshire for Star Wars.

Stephen Tindale said that President Bush needs the two sites as the "eyes and ears" of his planned Star Wars system.

"But Bush can't install the system without Tony Blair's approval."
