Greenpeace activists removing GM crop

At 5.15am, at Lyng, Norfolk, Greenpeace volunteers participated in a peaceful direct action, decontaminating a six acre field of GM maize due to flower within the week.

With the help of a farm mower, the crop was cut off at the roots, and the maize placed in bags in order to contain the contamination. Twenty-eight people have been arrested and charged with theft and criminal damage.

This was the third farm-scale trial to be disrupted in the UK this summer. Greenpeace also participated in the decontamination of a 25 acre field of GM oilseed rape on Sunday July 18th in Watlington, Oxfordshire. These field trials have been the subject of both national and local opposition. Planting goes ahead without public consent or even consultation, despite the impact it may have on local organic farmers or beekeepers.
