The UK came close to nuclear catastrophe yesterday morning - as a heavy-goods lorry collided with a train carrying nuclear flasks, on a level crossing near Ashford in Kent.

The train was on its way to collect used nuclear fuel from Dungeness nuclear plant. On its return journey, each flask would have contained as much radioactivity as a small nuclear reactor. A collision then would have caused thousands of cancer cases and left parts of Kent uninhabitable. Even worse, if the collision had been with a petrol tanker, the resulting fire could have set light to the fuel and spread fine particles of radioactive material for miles around.
