The photos of the PNTL ships were taken by CORE (Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment). The group was set up in 1980 as the Barrow Action Group to oppose the import of foreign nuclear waste fuel through the port of Barrow-in-Furness for reprocessing at Sellafield. Since then CORE has widened its campaign remit to cover all aspects of Sellafield's operations including the radioactive sea and air discharges, the resultant contamination of the local environment, and the health detriment to local communities and wildlife.

CORE is a non-political, non profit-making organisation, raising funds through membership fees, public donations, grants and consultancy fees. The Group, with two full-time workers and several volunteer workers based in their Barrow-in-Furness office, work closely with other local, national and international environmental and anti-nuclear groups.
