Peter Melchett - arrested for removing GM crop

Much of the morning was taken up by representations by the defence and prosecution to the judge regarding the parameters and phraseology of his instructions to the jury.

Mr Farmer, as prosecutor, was first to sum up. His main points were as follows: that all the defendants should be considered separately in terms of the two charges of criminal damage and theft; that this was neither a scientific nor a political debate; that the case was not about winning or losing the argument about GM crops; that the defendants might be thought to be highly educated and articulate, but not entitled in law to interfere with the farmer
