Ruth Cutler was born to Edward Hutchins Cutler and Lucy Carter Dunbar Cutler on
August 12, 1890 in Saint Paul. Ruth's father was a co-owner of Noyes Brothers &
Cutler, a Saint Paul-based wholesale drug firm. Ruth Cutler graduated from Vassar
College in 1912 and worked briefly as a social worker in Saint Paul for United
Charities before joining the Red Cross as part of the Vassar unit, serving with her
college friend Elinor Prudden. Ruth's unit was initially ordered to work in a
civilian relief capacity but while Ruth was en route, the group was put in charge of
a recreation hut in connection with an American army base hospital in Savenay,
France. Ruth died during an influenza pandemic in late December 1918, less than two
weeks after arriving in France.
Ruth's several siblings included William, Amelia, Lucia, Mary, and Elinor.
