Abstract:Folwell's papers document his career as a philologist; a lieutenant colonel in the Fiftieth New York Volunteer Engineers in the Civil War; a business man of Venice, Ohio (late 1860s); professor of mathematics and civil engineering at Kenyon College in Ohio (1868-1869); president (1869-1884), professor of political economy (1884-1907), and president emeritus (1907-1929) of the University of Minnesota; a member and president of the Minneapolis Board of Park Commissioners and the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts; a member of the State Board of Corrections and Charities; a Minnesota lawyer (1884-); the author of two histories of Minnesota; a leader in the development of Minnesota's public high school system; and president of the Minnesota Historical Society (1924-1927).

William Watts Folwell The family papers also provide information on life and education in western New York (1840s-1850s); genealogies of the Folwell, Bainbridge, Colby, Cole, and Heywood families; Hobart College, from which Folwell was graduated (1857); travel and study in Europe (1860-1861); life in Wisconsin and Minnesota as reported by Folwell's wife Sarah and members of her family (1860s); the public health activities of Dr. Charles Hewitt, who was instrumental in establishing the Minnesota State Board of Health; a sister's education at Mount Holyoke Seminary (1860s); the 1876 national exposition at Philadelphia; frontier life at Fort Benton (1870s-1880s); the practice of medicine in Buffalo, New York (circa 1865-1895); life on a western Minnesota farm; library problems and usages in Minnesota; the Minneapolis Board of Trade; St. Barnabas Hospital in Minneapolis; and the Grand Army of the Republic.
