Burma Campaign UK today publishes an updated version of the Boycott List of Burmese military products and brands.

The list is available here: burma_briefing-the-boycott-list.html

This Boycott List was first published in January 2020 to provide people in Burma with information they could use to avoid purchasing good and services from military companies. It was also intended to pressure governments, donors, UN agencies, aid agencies, international companies and others operating in Burma to avoid buying goods and services from military-owned companies, which they were resisting at the time.

Military-owned and controlled companies are an important source of revenue for the

Burmese military. Buying goods and services from the military increases their revenue

and this revenue is used to fund their operations, building their military capacity and paying for the human rights violations they commit.

Following the attempted military coup on 1st February 2021, a boycott of products by military companies was one of the first responses by the people of Burma.

Since then, recognising the role military companies play in financing human rights violations by the military, the UK, European Union, USA and Canada have imposed new sanctions on military companies.

The Boycott List is used by activists in Burma for their boycott campaigns, and by governments and companies wanting to avoid military businesses. Facebook used the Boycott List to identify military Facebook pages when taking down their pages.

“The Boycott List provides details of the products and services which help fund the Burmese military,” said Mark Farmaner, Director of Burma Campaign UK. “We encourage Embassies, UN agencies and international companies operating in Burma to use this list to ensure they are not providing funding to the military.”
