November 22,2021—South Sudan incumbent, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has ordered resuscitation of the Sudd Institute, a think tank organization, that was temporarily banned from operation by the National Security Services on security grounds.
The presidential order came to effect on Friday when president Kiir decided that the organization should be given a second chance despite allegations that its founders and management are behind the People’s Coalition for Civil Action(PCCA), a political civil rights organization that attempts to organize a civilians-led national protests to topple the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
In a letter addressed to Dr. Pauline Riak, the Chair of the Board of Directors, last Friday, the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Dr.Barnaba Marial Benjamin informs the public of President Kiir’s decision to operationalize the closed Sudd Institute.
” I write to you today to inform you of the decision of H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit that the Sudd Institute be allowed to resume its duties”,Minister Benjamin said in a statement.
According to the statement, the decision of H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardiit to operate the Sudd Institute has been communicated to the relevant authorities.
“As always, Dr. Pauline, please accept the assurance of my highest regards and consideration”, the statement added.
The key leaders of Sudd Institute such as Rajab Mohandis and Abraham Awolich have fled the country due to their declaration of the “People’s Coalition for Civil Action” that advocates for the regime change through peaceful uprising or else President Kiir and First Vice President should resign.
The Sudd Institute was shutdown in July by national security following its calls for resignation of president Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar.
Despite that the announcement was made through social media, the government deployed thousands of heavily armed police to the streets to crash down any sign of protests, and have since remained vigilance.
