40 passengers missing as boat capsizes in Sokoto

At least 40 people have been declared missing after a boat capsized in Sokoto on Sunday.
The boat was conveying local passengers to the Goronyo market, a popular food produce market in the state, when the accident occurred.
No less than 50 passengers were said to be on board the boat when it capsized in the river.
The National Emergency Agency confirmed the incident in a post on X.
NEMA director-general Zubaidar Umar disclosed that 10 people were rescued after a search party was deployed.
“About 10 persons have been rescued, while more than 40 passengers remain missing,” Ms Umar said in the post.
She said the agency was collaborating with local authorities and emergency responders in a search and rescue operation to locate the missing persons.
NEMA reassured the public of its commitment to saving lives, providing timely updates, and coordinating all necessary support for the affected families.
The disaster comes barely a week after 13 people died, and dozens more were declared missing after a boat ferrying around 100 passengers capsized in Niger.
