The Action Democratic Party (ADP) governorship candidate in Kano, Sha’aban Sharada, says he will establish a Qur’anic research centre if elected, vowing to make Quranic education compulsory in schools.

This is contained in a statement issued Sunday by the spokesman for his campaign council, Abbas Yusha’u.

Mr Sharada disclosed this when he informed Kano Islamic scholars of his decision to run for governor. He stated it vital to meet with them because ulamas are critical stakeholders in managing and moulding the thinking of Kano citizens.

He presented a bill in the House of Representatives for establishing a National Centre for Quranic Research in Kano.

The governorship candidate, representing the Kano municipal federal constituency, said the first and second readings for the centre’s creation would be held in the upcoming week.

Mr Sharada informed the ulamas that the Quranic research centre for teaching Quranic sciences would be located in Kano, given the state’s dominance among Quranic memorizers in Nigeria.

The lawmaker stated that, if elected the governor, he would make Quranic education mandatory in Kano’s primary and post-primary schools and urged ulamas to serve as a beacon for implementing government policies and initiatives.

The governorship candidate appreciated the ulamas who accepted the invitation and said as a community leader, he would continue to meet with them on important issues.
