A part of the Aree of Iree’s palace in Boripe North Local Council Area of Osun state, has been set alight by arsonists, Peoples Gazette learnt on Thursday.

The latest incident is coming barely a few weeks after some hoodlums set the palace of Akirun of Ikirun in Ifelodun Local Council Area of the state on fire after it was placed under lock and key.

One of the princes in the community, Lukman Olatunji was said to have been shot dead during the crisis at the palace of Akirun of Ikirun

However, a source who did not want his name mentioned told The Gazette that the incident at Iree occurred due to the arrest of a local chief, identified as Soliu Atoyebi.

“The man (Atoyebi) was arrested by operatives of the DSS and some of the indigenes who were unhappy about the development caused the crisis in the town leading to the setting ablaze of some buildings in the palace,” the source said.

It was further gathered that the youths took to the streets in a protest and blocked the major roads leading to Iree.

The Gazette also learned that men of the Fire Service from the Osun State fire service were called upon to put off the fire but were attacked by some of the angry residents.

Yemisi Opalola, the police spokesperson in Osun, could not be immediately reached for comment on the incident.

Several calls made to Ms Opalola’s official mobile line were not connecting at the time of filing this report.

Osun governor, Ademola Adeleke, on Monday, ordered the suspension of some traditional rulers in the state.

The traditional ruler of Iree, Raphel Ademola, was among the traditional rulers affected by the governor’s order.
