The family of the late Bamise Ayanwola, has written the Attorney-General of Lagos, seeking fiat to prosecute, a BRT driver, Nice Ominikoron, who is the prime suspect in the murder of Ms Ayanwola.
Peoples Gazette had earlier reported that the state government had arraigned the suspect, Mr Omininikoron, a driver with the state-run Bus Rapid Transport (BRT), before Yaba magistrate court.
The court ordered the suspect to be remanded at Ikoyi prison for 30 days over the alleged murder of the deceased.
The family’s lawyer is seeking fiat to prosecute the case on behalf of the state government.
A memo dated May 4 signed by the family’s lawyer, Adesina Ogunlana, said the (Ayanwola) family wish to have a more independent body conduct the prosecution.
“In their view, the Lagos state government, agency and officials are involved in the matter and may not be reasonably expected to act as the prosecutor against themselves.”
The legal counsel said that the family is concerned that the second rape allegations against the suspect by another person may complicate the matter.
“In addition, the family is concerned that the charges against the Defendant also include allegations of RAPE of another person, an incident distinct and separate from that of their deceased family member. This situation may result in unnecessary complications.”
In February, 22-year-old, Ms Ayanwola went missing after boarding a BRT bus with number 240257 at Chevron Bus-Stop going to Oshodi around 7:30 p.m.
Some days later, she was found dead at the Carter Bridge by Ogogoro Community, Lagos Island.
The driver of the BRT bus, Mr Ominikoron confessed to the crime.
