The Cross River House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Cross River Broadcasting Corporation (CRBC), Ikom, to absorb its casual workers as permanent staff.

This followed the adoption of a motion by Samuel Abang (APC-Ikom I) at plenary on Tuesday.

Mr Abang, who also advocated for better funding of the state-owned corporation, said that some casual workers had worked with the corporation for about 10 years without securing permanent employment.

“These members of staff, known as artists, receive a monthly allowance of between N6,000 and N8,000. This amount cannot sustain them and motivate them to put in their best for the corporation,” he said.

Contributing, Brian Odey (LP-Yala I) said that paying a meagre allowance to casual workers for upward of six months violated international labour laws.

He also raised concerns about the obsolete equipment and infrastructure in the corporation and called on the government to address the challenges.

After that, the parliament adopted the motion and called on the government to inaugurate the corporation board in line with Section 3 of the state’s Broadcasting Corporation law, 2004.

The speaker, Elvert Ayambem, lauded the lawmakers for their concern and insightful debate while calling on the state government to investigate the matter.
