The search and rescue operations resumed on Friday despite heavy downpours that started on Tuesday.

The death toll from a landslide that hit a mining village in Davao de Oro province in the southern Philippines on Thursday has risen to nine.

Local authorities disclosed this on Friday.

In a social media post, the municipality of Monkayo said rescuers recovered two more bodies, both women, near the houses buried by the mud and heaps of debris.

Police have confirmed the retrieval of the two women.

The Monkayo Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said one villager was critically injured.

Rescuers recovered seven bodies, including children, on Thursday, a few hours after the landslide hit.

The search and rescue operations resumed on Friday despite heavy downpours that started on Tuesday.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said over 70,000 families, or over 270,000 people, have been affected by flooding and landslides.

This is due to massive rains in four provinces in the Davao region on Mindanao Island.
