Eight people were injured in riots between fans of French second-division teams AC Ajaccio and Girondins Bordeaux on Monday.

The public prosecutor’s office in the Corsican capital has opened an investigation into the violence, legal sources said on Tuesday.

Clashes broke out between both sets of fans just a few minutes into the 0-0 draw, despite Bordeaux supporters supposedly being banned from the match.

The game was interrupted and the teams had to stay in the dressing rooms for almost an hour as police threw the Bordeaux fans out of the stadium.

Bordeaux condemned the violence and said they would take necessary measures to sanction those involved.

French football has been beset by crowd violence since fans returned after the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.
