The police on Thursday arraigned a 25-year-old man, Adejuwon Salami, in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting police officers.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a charge of assault.

The police prosecutor, Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 2, at about 11:30 a.m. at Aba Iyamedi Area, Ilawe Road in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant assaulted police officers while on official duty and also resisted arrest.

Mr Adeniyi said the offence contravened section 187(b) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State 2021.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Adeyinka Opaleke, urged the court to grant him bail, promising he would not jump bail.

The chief magistrate, Dolamu Babalogbon, granted the defendant bail of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until May 16 for a hearing.
