Ekiti: Police arraign 28-year-old for stealing phone

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

On Thursday, the police arraigned a 28-year-old man, Adesanmi Matris, before an Ado-Ekiti Magistrate’s Court for stealing a phone.

The defendant of no fixed address is standing trial on a charge of stealing.

The police prosecutor, Insp Sodiq Adeniyi, told the court that the defendant and others at large committed the offence on December 18, 2023, at about 6:00 a.m. in Igbara-Odo Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendant and others at large stole one Infinix 6 Android phone valued at N85,000 belonging to Akanle Olaniyi.

Mr Adeniyi said the offence contravened section 302(1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

He urged the court to adjourn the case to enable him to study the file and assemble his witnesses.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

Counsel to the defendant, Adunni Olanipekun, urged the court to grant the defendant bail with a promise that he would not jump bail.

The magistrate, Dolapo Babalogbon, granted the defendant N50,000 bail, with one surety in like sum.

She adjourned the case until February 14 for a hearing.
