An interest group, Arewa 100% Focus, has called on the National Assembly to consider the interests of Nigerians and adopt the electronic transmission of results in the Electoral Act amendment.
Its national president, Abubakar Fakai, made the call on Monday in Abuja, in response to the Electoral Act Amendment passed by the Senate on Wednesday.
Although several provisions of the law were amended, public attention has largely focused on the rejection of electronic transmission of election results from polling units to the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Result Viewing Portal.
Mr Fakai urged the two chambers of the National Assembly to review and consider the interests of the majority of Nigerians to lend greater credibility to Nigeria’s election and the INEC.
“We are urging the Senate and the House of Representatives to go back and do the needful. Based on the request of people, let them adopt the electronic transmission of the result.
“I think it is going to help the democracy of this country. We are solidly with the masses,” he said.
Also speaking, the group’s spokesman, AbdulHamid Dankyarko, said that the group was doing everything possible, in collaboration with the leadership of the National Orientation Agency, to sensitise Nigerians to the Electoral Act.
“All young Nigerians should focus on the Electoral Act, and we all have to organise ourselves as young Nigerians towards having a direct democratic system of government.
“We are encouraging the young generation to collect their PVCs and vote for the right candidates,” Mr Dankyarko said.
