Once work is over, what do you think people in Nigeria do for fun? With more disposable income available and extra free time in the working week, Nigerians have started to expand their interests.

This has led to the growth of many industries that have begun to entertain while bringing revenue into the country and enhancing its cultural sector. Below, we discuss some of the leisure industries that are rising in popularity and revenue in Nigeria.

Cinema

Nigerian cinema has been around for quite some time, dating back to the 19th century. It is generally split into four distinct eras. However, it is the New Nigerian Cinema Era that has pushed the industry forward.

This has centred around the shift from production aimed at the video format, back to the cinema format pioneered during the golden age of Nigerian cinema. This new method has meant improved narratives, higher production values, and much better acting.

The return to physical cinema was partly pioneered by the Silverbird group, who began reopening and restoring decrepit theatres and promoting them in the mid-2000s.

While the industry was once confined to home shores, with an increased diaspora, it has now spread across the globe. The Nigerian industry is now worth an estimated US$3 billion per annum.

Casual Gaming

Most Nigerians now choose to buy a mobile device as their primary method of video gaming. The industry is expected to grow to US$15.80 million by the end of 2027. Yet this is not just because of gamers who want to play major titles like PUBG and League of Legends.

A large part of this has been down to the casual gaming market, and those who want easy, relaxing entertainment that can be played quickly and easily.

Bingo is the ideal solution to that, and the use of online sites has been on the rise in the country for some time. The industry as a whole is small in Nigeria, as there is a lack of the large bingo halls you get in the United Kingdom and the US. This is possibly why the online field has grown so quickly, providing the best bingo games to win at the flick of a thumb.

These can include boards of different sizes and varied prizes. In fact, it is no longer about simply marking off numbers on a grid, but includes multiple variations to keep the game fresh.

In some cases, live bingo rooms are also available to add an element of interaction. Nigerian players can use offshore casinos to engage in them.

Food and Hospitality

Food as a form of entertainment was once an alien concept in Nigeria. Yet it has had a huge growth as of recently, like that seen in Europe and the US with its celebrity chefs. Sis Yemmie is one creator leading the charge, with her food blogs, lifestyle videos, and YouTube content on Nigerian cooking. Her friendly approach has seen many Nigerian households turn to cooking as a form of relaxation and bringing together the family, rather than purely as a form of sustenance.

Unlike other world cuisines, Nigerian cooking is quite unknown. It tends to concentrate on hearty soups and stews, filled with vegetables, legumes, and local meats such as goat and chicken.

Due to the great amount of arable land in the country and rising food prices, many people have also taken to growing their own food and rearing livestock to supplement their larder.

How these industries grow remains to be seen. If the Nigerian economy can gain strength and employment remains high, they are undoubtedly going to improve. For consumers, there has never been a better time to be Nigerian and have time on your hands to relax.
