The Enugu State House of Assembly has urged the state police command to stem incidents of attacks, killings and kidnapping that have become rife recently in the state.

On Wednesday, assemblyman Chinedu Okwu raised concerns when he paid a courtesy visit to the State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani.

Mr Okwu appealed to Ammani to intensify efforts to put an immediate end to the security breaches.

The visit was coming on the heels of a recent attacks in Eha-Amufu, Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.

The lawmaker, who is the House committee chair on Youths and Security, said the House was worried by the unwholesome development.

Mr Okwu, representing Aninri Constituency, further said that the development was causing panic and tension among the residents of the state.

According to him, the people can hardly sleep with their eyes closed.

He expressed the readiness of the assembly to assist the command to ensure effective protection of people’s lives and property, especially during the Yuletide celebrations.

Also, Johnson Chukwuobasi, representing

Awgu South, lamented that his constituency was not spared from the attacks.

Mr Chukwuobasi said the house would engage the state government to ensure that the police were provided with the necessary logistics to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.

Another member of the committee, Jeff Mba, alleged that the attacks in Oji River, including the killing of a former Commissioner for Rural Development, Gab Onuzulike, were perpetrated by persons from outside Enugu State.

The lawmakers appealed to the police boss to go after the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

Responding, Mr Ammani assured them that the command would leave no stone unturned to ensure a crime-free Yuletide season.

He said that police alone could not provide the needed security.

He argued that everyone had a role to play in the fight against crime and criminality in society.

The police chief urged the public to assist the police with useful information that would enable them to curb violent crimes in the state.
