Liverpool’s title hopes might have just been crushed by Everton, as the Reds suffered a shocking 2-0 defeat at the hands of their local rivals at Goodison Park Stadium on Wednesday

A win for Jurgen Klopp’s side would have seen them tied on 77 points with league leaders Arsenal in the race for the Premier League title but that was not the case as Everton picked up the maximum points.

Jarrad Branthwaite opened the scoring for Everton in the 27th minute of the Merseyside derby, smashing a ricocheted shot past goalkeeper Alisson Becker.

Liverpool were definitely the better side in the encounter with the larger percentage of possession and looked very dangerous in their attacking play on multiple occasions during the match.

However, Everton put an end to Liverpool’s hopes of turning the game around when Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored 13 minutes into the second half to seal the win for the Toffees.

Liverpool remain second on the league table with one point ahead of third-placed Manchester City, who have two games in hand. If City win the two games, they will go top of the table.

Meanwhile, Manchester United returned to winning ways after the Red Devils came back from behind twice to secure a dramatic 4-2 win over bottom side Sheffield United at Old Trafford.

United found themselves behind in the 35th minute when Andre Onana gifted Jayden Bogie a free pass and he calmly drove the ball near the post.

Meanwhile, a few minutes from the half-time break, Harry Maguire headed home a cross from Alejandro Garnacho to equalise for the Red Devils but did not last as Ben Brereton Diaz put Sheffield back in the lead five minutes into the second half.

In the 61st minute, Bruno Fernandes equalised for United from penalty before the Portuguese fired a long range left-footed shot from yards out to give the hosts the lead for the first time in the game.

Fernandes rounded up his wonderful performance of the night by providing an assist for Rasmus Hojlund as the Danish striker scored his seventh league goal of the season to seal the victory for the Reds.
