Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has sustained gunshot wounds to his legs after his convoy was shot at during a protest march.

On Thursday, Mr Khan led a protest march in Islamabad to demand snap elections. Sky News reports that his supporters are calling it an assassination attempt.

Sky’s Cordelia Lynch, who was at the scene, said a Sky News producer was standing close to Mr Khan and the injured politician after he was shot.

Mr Khan has been pushing for new elections after being removed from power in April. His six-day protest march from Lahore to Islamabad was to push for early elections to be held in the country.

In October, Pakistan’s election commission (ECP) found Mr Khan guilty of “corrupt practices” and disqualified him from being a member of parliament.

The case against Mr Khan was filed in August by a member of the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN), accusing the former prime minister of buying gifts given by foreign dignitaries from the state gift depository but did not disclose the assets in declarations submitted to the commission.

The case filed said Mr Khan had received a total of 58 boxes containing various items during his time in office.

Mr Khan challenged the verdict in the Islamabad High Court (IHC), which ruled that Mr Khan had not been barred from contesting in future elections and was eligible to compete in the Kurram district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on October 30.
