Experts recommend fire safety education in school curriculum
Some experts in fire management have suggested the inclusion of fire safety education in the school curriculum as part of measures to stop the frequent fire outbreaks witnessed in Lagos State.
They made the call during separate interviews on Tuesday.
The experts emphasised the urgent need for preventive measures and adoption of some strategies to significantly reduce the risk of fire incidents and protect lives and property nationwide.
A public health expert, Dr Funmi Adeola, said that public awareness campaigns on fire safety had become imperative as a preventive measure on fire outbreaks and as such, should be incorporated into the syllabuses.
“Nigerians need to understand the risks and know how to respond in case of an emergency. Regular fire drills and installation of smoke detectors is paramount for the entire family to prevent fire disasters. Also, training and having clear evacuation plans are essential steps everyone needs to learn that can save lives,” Ms Adeola said.
On his part, a building engineer, Ibrahim Suleiman called for stricter enforcement of building codes and establishment of fire safety regulations, in line with international standards to prevent fire outbreaks.
He said, “The government must take the lead in ensuring that buildings are constructed with fire-resistant materials and that there is adequate access to fire-fighting equipment in every community.’’
An environmental scientist, Dr Amina Bello, said the increase in fire incidents could be attributed to so many factors, including climate change, poor waste management and inadequate urban planning.
Ms Bello said, “The prolonged dry season, coupled with the accumulation of flammable materials in densely populated areas has created a perfect storm for these fires to spread quickly and cause significant damage.”
A resident of Ojo area of the state, Chinedu Okeke, said lack of precautionary measures against fire incidents had resulted in loss of lives and property.
“Simple things like ensuring electrical appliances are properly turned off and avoiding illegal storage of flammable goods can go a long way in preventing fire outbreak,” Mr Okeke said.
