Germany continues to seek a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, says German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock.

“We too can imagine being a permanent member,” Ms Baerbock said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. “But not out of self-interest, but in the course of a major modernisation that on the whole takes greater account of the realities of the 21st century.”

Ms Baerbock’s comments came after a UN Security Council meeting where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke in person for the first time since the Russian war against his country began in February 2022.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also attended the meeting.

Mr Zelensky had also spoken out in favour of Germany having a permanent seat in the most powerful UN body.

Ms Baerbock criticised Russia for “abusing” its veto power in the Security Council concerning its war in Ukraine.

“That is why the reform is more important than ever. However, we have to be realistic: it will not come tomorrow,” Ms Baerbock said.
