Group urges inclusion of sign language in Nigeria’s education curriculum

The International Sign Language Day is celebrated every year on September 23.

• September 23, 2022

The Association of Sign Language Interpreters of Nigeria (ASLIN) has asked that sign language be incorporated into the country’s education curriculum.

The Kwara chapter chairman of the association, Ibrahim Owolabi, made the call on Friday in Ilorin while marking the 2022 International Sign Language Day.

Mr Owolabi proposed that the government “officially adopt Sign Language as part of languages to be incorporated into education curriculum in Nigeria.”

According to him, the adoption “will allow the growth of sign language in Nigeria and its further adoption by the general populace.”

He also appealed to parents of deaf children not to hide them at home, stating that deafness is not a disease, not contagious, but a challenge that can be surmounted.

While appreciating the federal government for signing into law the Disability Bill, the group however implored the government to speed up the implementation at all levels.

The association also appreciated the Kwara government for employing more competent teachers to the state School for Special Needs (KSSN).

The ASLIN also appealed for government’s assistance in bringing in more interpreters to media houses and medical centres as members visit these places frequently.

Every September 23 is a day set aside to celebrate International Sign Language Day.
