The salaries and allowances of all the political appointees of Igbo Etiti Local Government Area in Enugu State have been withheld, pending their performance in the gubernatorial and state house of assembly elections scheduled to hold tomorrow.

A memo dated February 28, 2023, by the Office Of The Secretary, Igbo Etiti Local Government Area Headquarters, addressing all political appointees was obtained by Peoples Gazette.

The memo titled “Cessation of salaries and other allowances” stated that the salaries and allowances of all political appointees in Igbo Etiti Local Government Area would be withheld until after the elections.

The concerned political appointees are to deliver their political mandates in their various polling units to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with evidence, thereafter the restriction on their salaries and allowances would be lifted.

This means that the affected persons should forget about their salaries and allowances should they fail to deliver their polling units for PDP.

The memo reads: “Government of Enugu State of Nigeria, Office of the secretary Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area.

“Be informed that salaries and allowances of all political appointees of the local government council have been put on hold until after the elections.

“All concerned (political appointees) are to deliver on their political mandates in their various polling units, etc. to the PDP in the elections with evidence thereafter after which the restrictions on salaries and other allowances will be lifted if need be.”

The memo was signed by Donatus C. Ugwu for the Executive Chairman of the Igbo-Etiti local government and was copied to the HPM, Treasurer, and Payroll Officer.

The directive follows the harrowing defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the just concluded February 25, 2023, presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

The PDP, despite being the ruling party in the state, won only two political seats, one senatorial seat, and one House of Representatives seat, while the Labour Party took the rest.

The governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, also lost his bid to represent Enugu North Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
