United States President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, would plead guilty to two misdemeanour tax crimes and admit to illegally possessing a gun while a drug user.

The U.S. Attorney in Delaware, on Tuesday, filed papers indicating a plea agreement for Mr Biden has been reached.

After a five-year investigation, he is expected to agree to drug treatment and monitoring.

The terms of the agreement are likely to keep him out of jail.

Mr Biden, 53, was charged with illegally owning a firearm in 2018 after lying about his drug use when he purchased a gun.

He was also charged with failing to file and pay taxes in 2017 and 2018, which are misdemeanour offences.

Although, the proposed deal would still need to be approved by a judge.

It is unclear when Mr Biden will appear in court to enter his guilty plea.

The plea deal brings to an end a long-running justice department investigation into whether he properly reported his income and made false statements on paperwork used to purchase a firearm in 2018.

In 2014, Mr Biden was also discharged from the U.S. Navy after testing positive for cocaine.
