Gianni Infantino on Thursday was reelected as the president of the world’s football governing body, FIFA, for the third consecutive time.

He was reelected unopposed at the ongoing FIFA congress in Kigali, Rwanda.

The 52-year-old football administrator assumed office as the head of FIFA in 2016 to complete the tenure of Joseph Blatter, who was suspended over corruption allegations.

He was then reelected in June 2019 before Thursday’s election in Kigali, contesting as the sole candidate – one more in 2027 until 2031 is possible, according to FIFA statutes.

Infantino is eligible to contest in the next four years because he was initially reelected to complete Blatter’s remaining term.

Meanwhile, his reelection did not have the backing of all FIFA member federations, including the German Football Federation (DFB), Sweden and Norway.

They are demanding FIFA compensate migrant workers who worked on multiple projects over human rights abuses by the Qatar government in the build-up to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, among other issues.
