Assuming that a minimum of 992 houses were built annually, the United Nations has projected that it would take at least 80 years to reconstruct the homes and infrastructure destroyed by the Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip.

According to a UN analysis evaluating the extent of destruction caused by the current conflict, Gaza will require almost a century to recover from the destruction of tens of thousands of buildings.

The UN, which obtained data from the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, said that 370,000 homes had already been damaged and that 79,000 homes had been totally demolished.

But rebuilding the destroyed homes alone —without taking account of the damaged ones— could take 80 years if it was rebuilt at the same speed deployed in the aftermath of the 2014 and 2021 wars, according to the United Nations Development Program and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia.

“The level of destruction in Gaza is such that the required assistance to rebuild would be on a scale not seen since 1948,” stated the report, which added that the impact “will be felt for years.”

Still, the war has not ceased as Israel is adamant about bringing Gaza to its knees completely after the Hamas militant group attacked an Israeli music festival, killing thousands and abducting about 1,400 hostages.

Some of the hostages were released after negotiations between both parties.
