Prominent avant-garde fashion designer and trailblazer Issey Miyake has died in hospital in Tokyo aged 84.

On Tuesday, the Issey Miyake Studio and Issey Miyake Group revealed that the late designer passed away on August 5 from liver cancer.

“Miyake’s dynamic spirit was driven by a relentless curiosity and desire to convey joy through the medium of design.” It stated that “as per Mr Miyake’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service,” the company said

The statement issued by the Issey Miyake Studio and Issey Miyake Group stated that, as per Mr Miyake’s wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.

Mr Miyake was born in Hiroshima, Japan and was seven years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on the city in 1945. This left him with a pronounced limp. Mr Miyake was insistent on not being referred to as the designer who escaped the atomic bomb and refrained from discussing his traumatic childhood until 2009 when he wrote an op-ed in support of nuclear disarmament, published in the New York Times.

He studied graphic design at a Tokyo art university and clothing design in Paris, where he worked with famed fashion designers Guy Laroche and Hubert de Givenchy, before heading to New York. In 1970, he returned to Tokyo and founded the Miyake Design Studio.

Mr Miyake’s designs are in museums, including the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection. In 2010, he received the Order of Culture and in 2016 was awarded the Commandeur de l’Ordre National de la Légion d’honneur by the French government.
