Journalists urged to be balanced in reporting army operations
Maj.-Gen. Godwin Mutkut, general officer commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Sokoto, on Tuesday urged journalists to be balanced in reporting events in their professional duties.
Mr Mutkut made the call when the leadership of the state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a courtesy visit in his office.
He said balanced, fair, objective and factual reports would enhance security.
He urged reporters to ensure accuracy in their reports, emphasising the collective responsibility to contribute towards a peaceful nation.
The GOC assured of the openness of the army to confirm any report about its operations and stressed the need to avoid misleading information that could aid criminals.
“We appreciate journalists who provide fair reportage by hearing from all sides, as opposed to purveyors of fake reports who often lack balance,” he said.
Mr Mutkut expressed gratitude for the visit and assured of the army’s commitment to collaborate with journalists to restore peace and security in the country.
