The rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, Salisu Usman, has warned newly admitted students against social vices, including wearing “provocative” clothes.

The rector gave the warning at the 31st orientation and matriculation ceremonies of the institution’s 2023/2024 academic session on Tuesday in Lokoja.

“My dear students, to whom much is given, much is expected. In this regard, I must inform you that we have zero tolerance for all forms of social vices,” said the rector.

He stressed that vices such as cultism, gunrunning, examination malpractice, drug abuse, alcoholic addiction, unhealthy social gatherings, cybercrime, incitement to violence, gangsterism and destruction of public property, stealing and indecent dressing would not be tolerated.

“My simple warning is for you to stay away from these vices to avoid running foul of the law. Any breach will attract appropriate penalties, including outright expulsion and prosecution.

“The Students’ Information Handbook that will be distributed to you through your respective departments will guide you on the dos and don’ts of the polytechnic.

” Ignorance of the law has no place in the polytechnic and will not be condoned,” Mr Usman warned.

The rector emphasised that cultism was completely forbidden on the school’s campus and warned them to desist from any form of cult-related activities.

“It may interest you to know that we have specifically put in place all visible and invisible security architectures in strategic places to deal with cultists, their sympathisers and sponsors.

“You are therefore advised to stay free of all cult-related lifestyles. You are also advised to report any move intended to intimidate and lure you into or enlist you into cultism,” Mr Usman added.

He urged the students to dress modestly.

“Undue exposure of body parts is considered provocative to the sensibilities of others and will be severely dealt with,” he said.

The institution matriculated 4,349 students.
