Lagos govt. tasks contractors on timely project delivery

The Lagos State government on Saturday issued marching orders to contractors handling regeneration projects on Lagos Island to adhere to the timeline for completion.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known in a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kunle Adeshina.
Mr Wahab said the state government was determined to proffer a permanent solution to flooding in Lagos Island.
The commissioner stated that the project, with respect to the urban regeneration of the axis, was expected to bring relief to residents in Lagos Island and its environs.
“You cannot make the omelette without breaking the egg, so the pain would be there temporarily, but it is for a long time joy,” said Mr Wahab.
He stated that the construction of the drainage network, as well as road infrastructure, was jointly undertaken by the Office of Infrastructure, LASURA, and the Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.
The commissioner added that the project would address perennial flooding issues across Lagos Island and environs.
He said the aforementioned agencies had a different timeline for the project’s delivery, which included road and drainage infrastructure, amongst others.
“The team just wants to ensure that the timelines are strictly adhered to by the contractors while the quality of the job remains high,” he said.
He said the ministry’s team visits the areas at intervals to supervise and ensure that the community is taking ownership of the construction.
Mr Wahab urged residents to report any unusual incidents to the ministry promptly.
He said the team also visited Iwaya and environs as a result of flooding issues being experienced in the area.
Mr Wahab assured the community that the projects would be captured in the 2026 budget.
The commissioner directed that all environmental black spots, such as street trading, illegal shanties, and indiscriminate waste disposal, among others, around Iwaya and Yaba in Lagos Mainland LGA, must be addressed.
He said the government was meeting with the PSP waste operators regularly to be on the same page regarding waste management.
The Special Adviser, E-GIS and Urban Development, Olajide Babatunde, also on the inspection tour, expressed readiness to deliver all the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA’s) projects to high-quality standards.
He said the contractor, Tzipium Nigeria Ltd., was ready to commence construction of the project once the Ministry of the Environment had completed its part.
The places visited include Ajoke Street/Iya Omolere and Shogunro Village (System 2, Somolu Canal, Lagos Mainland Axis), Iwaya, System 3B1 Majaro–Iwaya, Princess Street, and Isale Gangan, Lagos Island.
