Lawmakers working to lessen suffering of Nigerians: Ogun rep

“We want to make sure that Nigerians lead a better life.’’

• December 26, 2023

Member of the House of Representatives, Olufemi Ogunbanwo (APC-Ogun), has said the House is concerned about the state of the nation, especially the plight of ordinary Nigerians as fallout of the fuel subsidy removal.

He said lawmakers have been mandated to reach out to their constituents in their various constituencies across the country to cushion the effect.

Mr Ogunbanwo said this while speaking with journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said though many of the lawmakers were already reaching out to their constituents, they would not stop at the festive period but would equally consider what could be done to cushion the effect of the current economic hardship in the country in the long run.

The lawmaker said, “We want to make sure that Nigerians lead a better life. That is why, on our platform, we have been directed to ensure we alleviate the suffering of the people in line with the renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.”

Speaking about his constituency, the Ijebu-Ode Odogbolu/Ijebu North-East Federal Constituency, the representative said he had given grants and financial support to his people, including ongoing bursary awards to students of tertiary institutions within his constituency.

“We are supporting over 200 people in higher institutions with bursaries; today was meant to be the closing date but many of them have pleaded that they could not access their results, so we have given a week’s extension.

“We have given grants to widows too and we are giving another round of grants for this festive period. We are equally teaching them how to fish rather than fishing for them,” he said.

He said the cause of the hardship must be addressed to assuage the feelings of the people, adding that the Federal Government must be encouraged to alleviate the suffering of the people.

The lawmaker said that the way the government of President Bola Tinubu was working showed that it took the welfare of the people as a priority, especially with the 50 per cent reduction for those travelling for the festive period.
