Major shakeup in Nigerian Navy involving 128 senior officers

The Nigerian Navy has announced the promotion and redeployment of senior officers nationwide.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, has approved appointments of senior officers comprising Rear Admirals and Commodores as part of the routine reorganisation in the service.

Navy spokesman Adedotun Ayo-Vaughan announced this in a statement on Monday.

The navy said the new appointments resulted from the promotion of 128 senior officers in December 2022, mainly 52 rear admirals and 76 commodores.

In the shakeups, Rear admiral Garba Abubakar was reappointed as the Nigerian Navy delegate to the Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition in Saudi Arabia.

Rear Adm. Akano Adesope was moved from the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru and appointed admiral superintendent of the Naval Ordnance Depot. Similarly, the former director of administration of the Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Kennedy Egbuchulam, was appointed the pioneer chief of communications and information technology.

Former Chief of Defence Space Administration, Rear Admiral Nnamdi Muogilim, was moved to Defence Headquarters as the executive director of operations of the Navy Holdings Limited. Erstwhile commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship, WEY, Rear Admiral Adewale Olanrewaju, would take over as the director of standards at the Naval Headquarters. The former deputy director of communication intelligence at the Defence Intelligence Agency, Rear Admiral Fatah Sanusi, took over as executive director of administration at the human resource and personnel management at the Navy Holdings Ltd.

“Rear Admiral Nuhu Bala, the former Director of Transformation, Defence Headquarters, has been reappointed as the Deputy Chief of Defence Space Administration. Rear Admiral Danjuma Moses, former Director of Training, DHQ, takes over as the deputy commandant of Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji,” stated the navy. “The routine reshuffling of the senior naval officers also affected Rear Adm. Vincent Okeke, former director of logistics, DHQ, who has been reappointed as director of Plans, DHQ and Rear Adm. Yakubu Wambai, the erstwhile Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command moves to DHQ as the Director of Transformation.”

The navy added, “The former Director Veterans Affairs, Naval Headquarters, Rear Admiral Ismaila Zelani, has been appointed director of administration at Naval Headquarters. Rear Admiral Emmanuel Beckley, the erstwhile Admiral Superintendent Naval Ordnance Depot, moves to Headquarters Defence Intelligence Agency as the Director of Logistics.”

The navy also announced that Rear Admiral Domnan Dangwel was redeployed from DHQ to Naval Headquarters as the director of special projects. Rear Admiral Tanko Pani would remain in DHQ and be appointed director of training. Former deputy director of earth observation at DSA, Rear Admiral Hamisu Sadiq, moved to NHQ as director of safety. Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole would take over as the director of communications at NHQ.

The former flag officer commanding the Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Dewu, took over as the director of the project, implementation, monitoring and evaluation directorate. Rear Admiral Kennedy Ezete was moved to DHQ as the director of project monitoring. Rear Admiral Noel Madugu, ex-deputy director of special operation forces, DHQ, was appointed director of logistics.

“The erstwhile director of logistics, Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Oshodi, Rear Admiral Daupreye Matthew, is to resume as the director of innovation and concept development, NHQ. While Rear Admiral Emmanuel Nmoyem was appointed as the director of the Human Rights Desk, DHQ, while Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shettima, formerly chief of logistics, NHQ, takes over as the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command,” the statement added, among others.
