Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has expressed concern over renewed attacks by bandits in the North West and directed the Nigerian Military to be more proactive in decimating the criminals.

Mr Matawalle, who gave the directive on Friday in Abuja, said the bandits had increased their activities in Kaduna, Katsina, and Zamfara, leading to attacks on personnel, loss of lives and destruction of military hardware.

“The Nigerian military should adopt a more proactive approach in decimating the activities of bandits and dealing with insecurity in the above-mentioned states,” Mr Matawalle added.

The deputy defence minister called for intensified operations against the criminals as well as increased synergy among the security services to wipe out the insurgents and terrorists in the region successfully.

Mr Matawalle said the federal government has placed a premium on the safety and well-being of all citizens and will continue to take decisive actions to curb the menace of terrorism and banditry in communities across the country.

Mr Matawalle said this was imperative in ensuring a conducive environment for thriving agricultural activities.

“Enhanced security in the region will not only safeguard the lives and properties of our people but also improve the quality of farming and irrigation.

“Farmers will be able to cultivate their lands without fear of attacks, thus ensuring food security and economic prosperity for the region,” the minister added.

Mr Matawalle solicited the support of all patriotic citizens to the military and other security agencies battling to rid the North-West region of criminal elements.
