Algeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign ended in a stunning group-stage exit with a 1-0 loss to underdogs Mauritania.

The historic victory for the Lions of Chinguetti secured by Mohamed Dellahi’s first-half goal, marked their first-ever progression to the AFCON knockout stages.

Djamel Belmadi’s team, requiring a win for last-16 qualification, missed early opportunities, including a close-range chance for Houssem Aouar.

Mauritania gained confidence with Dellahi coolly converting after Souleymane Anne’s initial attempt, taking a surprising lead. Despite Algeria introducing Riyad Mahrez in the second half, they faced a 1-0 defeat and a challenging exit.

Algeria pressed forward, but Mauritania’s resilient defence and missed opportunities by the Greens led to a fairytale victory for Amir Abdou’s side.

This defeat marked Algeria’s second consecutive failure to reach the AFCON knockout stages.
