Russia has serious questions to answer, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after reports of the death of leading Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny.

Mr Stoltenberg described Mr Navalny as a “strong voice for freedom” and said NATO had called for his release from prison for a long time.

“All the facts have to be established, and Russia has serious questions to answer,” he told reporters.

The top NATO official declined to draw a link to the upcoming Russian presidential election but noted Russia “has become a more and more authoritarian power” for many years.

“I’m deeply saddened and very concerned,” Mr Stoltenberg said.

Mr Navalny, 47, had “felt unwell” after taking a walk and “immediately lost consciousness,” Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service said in a statement Friday. “The facility’s medical staff immediately arrived and an ambulance brigade was called.”

The penitentiary disclosed that all efforts made to revive Mr Navalny by healthcare personnel failed, leading doctors to declare him dead.
