The Nigerian Air Force on Monday said one of its helicopters crashed while on a rescue mission in Niger.

The MI-171 Soviet-built helo lost control and crashed near Chukuba village at about 1:00 p.m., spokesman Edward Gabkwet, an air commodore, said in a statement.

The rescue team was flying from a primary school in Zungeru to Kaduna when it lost control of the copter in the village, situated in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

No casualties were immediately reported. The military immediately activated a search and rescue team for all passengers, while a preliminary probe of the accident would soon commence.

The crash marked the latest in a string of mishaps involving Nigerian air assets. At least two military aircraft crashed last month, with some of the pilots managing to escape with severe injuries.
