Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam have announced the signing of Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey from Scottish Premiership side Rangers for just under £23m.

The guaranteed fee is £19.7m, but the deal could soar to £22.7m after add-ons, with Rangers also securing a 10 per cent sell-on fee.

The 22-year-old signed for five years and has flown into the team’s preseason camp in Austria today to join his new teammates.

His exit seals a club-record fee for Rangers, with the Ibrox club making a healthy profit on a player they paid a miserly £230,000 from Leicester City in 2020. The club’s previous record sale was that of Nathan Peterson, who moved to Everton for £16m in January.

“Rangers Football Club can confirm Calvin Bassey has joined Ajax in a deal which is the largest in Rangers’ history,” a club statement read.

Basset made 65 appearances for the Light Blues in his two years stay, playing “his part Rangers’ historic 55th league title victory, won the 2022 Scottish Cup, while also having a huge role in the incredible UEFA Europa League run to the final in Seville last season,” according to the club statement.

Bassey is expected to fill the void at Ajax, soon to be left by Lisandro Martinez, who is widely expected to sign for Manchester United.
