The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has strongly condemned Wednesday’s military coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum of Niger.

The Saudi Press Agency reported that the OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha is following with great concern the developments in Niger, which is an OIC member state.

The OIC chief denounced any attempt to seize power by force and demanded the immediate release of the president and the restoration of the rule of law in the country, it added.

Mr Taha expressed his solidarity with the people of Niger and the OIC’s full support for the regional efforts towards restoring peace, security, and stability to the West African country and the entire Sahel region.

Soldiers in Niger have overthrown Mr Bazoum, the democratically elected president, the country’s defence and security forces said in a press release broadcast on national television late Wednesday, hours after the president was allegedly held hostage.
