The Ondo government says residents in the state would soon enjoy 22-hour regular power supply as part of its strategy to cushion the effect of hardship occasioned by fuel subsidy removal.

Bamidele Ademola-Olateju, the Ondo commissioner for information and orientation, disclosed on Monday at a media parley in Akure.

Mrs Ademola-Olateju explained that the government was already working with some private power firms that would assist in generating electricity and distribution for the benefit of the state.

“I know for sure that certain kilowatts of electricity will be generated by a private company coming to Ondo state.

“I am bold to say that by the time Governor (Rotimi) Akeredolu will be leaving office in February 2025, Akure and its environs will have 22 hours of power supply based on what we are expecting,” she told newsmen on Monday.

According to her, the regular supply of electricity, aside from enhancing businesses for artisans, would also serve as a big relief for the residents of the state.

“I know it will be a big relief for residents of this area. We are even considering our own electricity regulation commission (ERC), So everything is ready.”

The Ondo commissioner’s response came after President Bola Tinubu, shortly upon assumption of office, assented to the electricity bill, which empowers states and companies to generate, transmit, and distribute electricity.

Recall that the new electricity law repeals the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 and consolidates the laws relating to the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).
