An oil truck caught fire in Lagos on Wednesday, killing one person, while the driver sustained injuries.

In the lone accident around the Mushin axis of the state, the empty tank went up in flames after the driver suddenly lost control due to reckless driving.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said in a statement on Wednesday that the incident occurred at about 2:16 a.m. on Wednesday at Alakara, Mushin area of Lagos State.

The tanker driver was rescued and rushed to the hospital for treatment but his assistant died immediately, the rescue agency said.

“The timely recovery operation was in response to the distress call received by the Agency at 02:16a.m followed by a swift 02:25a.m arrival time at Alakara, Mushin Bus Stop.

“The prompt response of the Agency forestalled fire outbreaks and other secondary incidents at the accident scene, with swift recovery of the yet-to-be-identified Truck Assistant that lost his life in the accident,” said the agency boss Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

Mr Oke-Osanyintolu agency said the area has been cordoned by LASEMA and other sister agencies to prevent secondary crashes.

He added that the body of the truck assistant has been handed over to police officers at Alakara Police Station

“The bagged commodity (remains of the Truck Assistant) was also handed over to the Police Officers at the incident scene for further processing,” Mr Oke-Osanyintolu said.
