A train conveying passengers from Warri to Itapke in Kogi on Sunday derailed, leaving many occupants stranded.

The “rail line” was said to have cut off causing the derailment at a close-by heavy forest in Kogi.

The incident caused panic, with passengers scampering for safety over fear of being kidnapped.

The incident came barely a week that suspected herdsmen launched an attack on a train station in Igueben in Edo, abducting the passengers.

The incident caused public condemnation, with many worried about the level of insecurity in the country.

A source who witnessed the Sunday incident said the train which belonged to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) was shuttling between Warri in Delta and Itakpe when the incident occurred.

The source who pleaded anonymity, added that there were no injuries nor causality. He said that “many people (passengers) just had to run for their life.”

The NRC is yet to give an official reaction to the incident as of the time of filing this report.
