Peter Obi dumps Labour Party for ADC
A former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has officially defected to the coalition-backed African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The ex-Anambra State governor also declared his readiness to join forces with other Nigerians to resist electoral malpractice during the 2027 general elections.
Mr Obi announced his decision on Wednesday in Enugu State. The decision marked a major political shift barely two years after he contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party.
The former presidential candidate said the move was driven by a desire to build a broad-based coalition focused on rescuing Nigeria from its current challenges.
“We are ending this year with the hope that in 2026. we will begin a rescue journey. We will resist rigging of elections by every lawful means in 2027,” he said.
Mr Obi stressed that his decision was based on personal ambition but about the future of the country, noting that credible elections remained central to Nigeria’s democracy and development.
