Nigerians in expectation of a messiah to save them from the country’s widespread economic, political, and security doldrums should have their “brains examined”, says activist Dele Farotimi.

Mr Farotimi said this in response to an X user’s inquiry about whether former presidential candidate Peter Obi is the messiah Nigerians are waiting for.

Quoting the post, asking “Is Peter Obi the messiah we are expecting?”, Mr Farotimi said, “I expect no messiah to save Nigeria and the victims of Nigeria, and anyone expecting a messiah should have their brains examined.

“Your messiah resides in your mirror; nobody’s coming to save us, it is up to us to save ourselves.”

In July, the activist and lawyer stated that forming a political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections without electoral reforms in place to guarantee a free and fair exercise is a labour in vain.

“No be INEC go declare 2027?? Na so dem trust Tinubu reach?” Mr Farotimi posted in Pidgin. Any coalition without electoral reforms in place shall labour in vain,” Mr Farotimi said.

Mr Farotimi urged opposition politicians to push for electoral reforms, saying that entering the 2027 election without reforms to ensure free and fair elections is “brainless”.

Mr Farotimi made this assertion days after the coalition of opposition politicians announced the adoption of the African Democratic Congress as its official party to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The coalition includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Peter Obi, and former Senate President David Mark.
