A businessman, Udeme Sunday, was on Monday docked in the Dei-Dei Grade I Area Court in Abuja for alleged pumpkin (ugwu) seed fraud.

The police charged Mr Sunday, who lives in Tasha II, Abuja, with criminal breach of trust and cheating.

The prosecution counsel, Charity Nwaosu, told the court that on July 2, the complainant, Ogwu Edith of Shangri quarters Dei-Dei, Abuja, reported the matter at the Zuba Police Station.

Ms Nwaosu said that sometime in April 2023, the complainant gave the defendant N96,000 to supply pumpkin seeds for her.

She said the defendant supplied pumpkin seed worth N20,000 and dishonestly converted the balance of N76,000 to personal use.

The prosecutor said that during the police investigation, the defendant could not give a satisfactory account of himself.

She said the offence contravened section 312 of the Penal Code.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The judge, Saminu Suleiman, granted the defendant N100,000 bail with one surety in like sum.

The matter was adjourned until July 15 for a hearing.
